Cooley Law School Students to Assist Lekol Pa Nou Students
EfP board members Pierre Balthazar and David Smith pose with members of the Caribbean Law Students Association and their advisor, Mr. Otto Stockmeyer at a Sept 22 gathering in Lansing, Michigan. The Thomas M. Cooley Law School is an independent, graduate college of law, founded in 1972 in Lansing, Michigan. It's website indicates that it has grown from a regional law school into "the nation's largest Juris Doctor program." As a school committed to providing a legal education to people from “all walks of life" Cooley has attracted a diverse national and international student body. The Caribbean Law Students Association (CLSA) is an excellent illustration of this commitment. The association has as its mission statement "To foster legal support and mentorship for students of Caribbean heritage, those who have ties to the region, and those with an interest in Caribbean culture." Their agenda has three broad themes: educational, social and community service. Yamiley Juste, a student with Haitian roots, helps coordinate the community service activities in her role as Chair of the Social Activities Committee. She and her colleagues have reached out to Education for Prosperity in recent months and, following several get-acquainted meetings, will be hosting a fund-raising event for Lekol Pa Nou, in Lansing, on October 13. Proceeds from this event will help pay teachers and purchase educational supplies in Pichon, Haiti. Who knows if some students in second or third grade at Lekol Pa Nou might one day attend Cooley Law School themselves, as a result of these emerging relationships?
